Lady Scott
(1829-1909)

Mildred Anne Hartopp was the eldest of the six daughters of Sir William Edmund Cradock-Hartopp3rd Bt.

She married firstly, on 5 January 1854, Sir Francis Edward Scott, son of Sir Edward Dolman Scott of Great Barr Hall near Walsall in the West Midlands. Her first husband was, from birth, the 2nd Baronet Bateman of Hartington Hall, Derbyshire, and from 1851 also 3rd Baronet Scott. He died, aged only 39, on 21 November 1863, leaving his wife a family of two sons, the elder of which died at Eton in 1871 when he was 17 years old.

Lady Bateman and Scott married secondly, on 12 September 1868, Edward Pakenham Alderson, son of Sir Edward Hall Alderson. Their marriage produced no children.

She died, aged 82, on 3 December 1909. A detailed report of her funeral appeared in the Birmingham Daily Gazette (9 December 1909): 'There was quite an impressive scene at the funeral, which took place yesterday afternoon, of Lady Bateman and Scott, of Great Barr hall. The interment took place in the family vault which was lined with red and white flowers, and the service, which took place in Great Barr Church, was choral [...] On the coffin, which was of polished oak, was the inscription "Mildred Anne Scott, widow of Sir Francis Scott, Bart. Born October 30, 1827 [sic]. Died December 3, 1909."' The report also included a list of the hymns, a list of the mourners and a list of those who had sent wreaths.
