The following entry in the daybooks shows the same props and backdrop, placed in exactly the same relation to one another. Moreover, the loop of fabric at the top of the column on the right is quite distinctive, and only occurs in a short run of portraits.]

[An inked inscripition recto in the lower margin identifies the sitter as 'E. Campbell,' presumably Miss Stuart's married name.]
